Regional
Consultations and Capacity Building Workshops on REDD-plus, including
on relevant Biodiversity Safeguards, AFRICA
– Final report available
The 'Africa Regional Consultation and
Capacity Building Workshop on
REDD-plus, including on relevant biodiversity safeguards', was held in
Cape Town, South Africa, from 20 to 23 September 2011. Download the final

Submission
by the CBD Secretariat to UNFCCC
 The
Africa meeting concluded the series of regional consultations and
capacity building workshops on REDD+. In total, representatives from 63
CBD Parties and from 55 international organizations, non-governmental
organizations, private sector institutions and indigenous and local
community organizations participated in the workshop series. The
summaries of the workshops were submitted to the UNFCCC in response to
a request by its SBSTA to submit views on methodological guidance for
activities relating to REDD+. The submission is available
in English, French
and Spanish.

CBD
at UNFCCC COP 17 – Durban, South Africa
The
Rio
Conventions Pavilion will convene at UNFCCC COP 17, at the
Climate
Change and Response Expo, where a range of events will be organized,
highlighting the linkages between biodiversity, climate change and
sustainable land management, including a thematic day on REDD+ on 1

Day 5 will take place on 4 December 2011 and will feature
several events related to REDD+, including a REDD+ Biodiversity Safeguards

The
Role of Biodiversity in Climate Change Mitigation in Latin America
ROBIN is a new research
project on "The Role of Biodiversity in Climate Change Mitigation in
Latin America". It will inform the implementation of REDD+ by
identifying options for using biodiversity and ecosystems for
climate change mitigation in multi-functional forest
landscapes, taking into account trade-offs with other
ecosystem services. The research will be done by an inter-disciplinary
team from Latin America and Europe using a combination of field-data,
remote sensing, participatory approaches, integrated modelling and
assessments at local and regional scales. For more information,

First
Endowment to Aid Community-Owned Bird Reserves in Peruvian Andes
Conservation
of
high-altitude Polylepis forests in the Andes Mountains will benefit
from a new $2 million endowment fund established by Fondo de las
Américasú, Conservation International’s Global Conservation Fund,
Conservation International Perú, and American Bird Conservancy.
Beginning in 2012, the endowment will aid in the conservation of
threatened bird species, including the Royal Cinclodes, White-browed
Tit-Spinetail, and Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant. More >>

Stewardship Council engagement and certification in the Congo Basin
Recent developments related to Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC) engagement and activities in the Congo Basin
include: (1) High Conservation Value Forests (HCVFs); (2) Discussion on
preconditions to FSC certification (3) Accreditation Services
International (ASI) audits (4) Regional standard for the Congo
Basin (5) Mediating understanding between parties.

Intact
forest landscapes: why it is crucial to protect them from industrial
exploitation by Greenpeace Research Laboratories, Tech note 5/2011
Intact
Forest Landscapes (IFLs) are blocks of unroaded forest (>500
km2) untouched by commercial logging or farming. IFLs are irreplaceable
and essential for the Earth’s climate, biodiversity and people.
Greenpeace has released a new report compiling the fragmentation
impacts of roads and logging on IFLs, and detailing how protection of
these intact forests (e.g. under REDD) can be made meaningful through
participatory land-use planning. More

"Understanding
Forest Bonds"
On 21 November, the Global Canopy
Programme
will release "Understanding Forest Bonds", a non-technical guide to
forest bonds and how they can help raise the tens of billions of
dollars needed to finance conservation and sustainable use of forests. "Unlocking
Forest Bonds", published with WWF's Forest and Climate
Initiative and the Climate Bonds Initiative.
