Meeting
Twelfth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 12)
This side event would focus on the "International Standard for Sustainable Wild Collection of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (ISSC-MAP)" that has been developed in a joint initiative by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), the IUCN Medicinal Plant Specialist Group, WWF and TRAFFIC. ISSC-MAP focuses on ecological aspects of sustainable management of medicinal plants, as well as covering social and economic factors. This standard relates to several targets of the GSPC, particularly targets 3,6,12 and 13. It contributes to the implementation of the targets of the GSPC providing clear principles, criteria and indicators for sustainable use in the area of wild collection of medicinal and aromatic plants. It also helps contribute to the wider sustainable use and access and benefit sharing objectives of the CBD, with links to the biome focused programmes of work (e.g. Forests). The side event would be organized and hosted by BfN, IUCN, WWF, and TRAFFIC. The event would include the presentation of case studies of medicinal plants use and wild collection from the Balkans, India and Latin America to illustrate on the ground implementation of the International Standard.
