Side Event
MAINSTREAMING below-ground BIODIVERSITY IN A CHANGING CLIMATE
Organizer
UNEP
Date and Time
19 May 2010 13:15 - 14:45
The side event will highlight the achievements of the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Below-ground Biodiversity project. A GEF-funded project that is implemented through UNEP and being executed by CIAT-TSBF and that comes to a close in 2010. The side event will make a case of the importance of below-ground biodiversity, that can be considered a special component of agro-biodiversity, for the regulation of soil-based delivery processes that support the provision of so many ecosystem goods and services, but especially to sustain agricultural productivity in the light of climate change. The side event will discuss what is needed to mainstream research in soil biodiversity within agro-biodiversity research and agricultural research in general, to mainstream conservation and management of soil biodiversity within the context of conservation of biological diversity and management of soil and land health for improved eco-efficient agricultural production and to mainstream BGBD in policy development for conservation of biological diversity, for soil and land conservation policies and policies related to the mitigation and adaptation to climate change
