Side Event
A Global Emergency Strategy for Coral Reef Ecosystems
Organizer
Zoological Society of London
Date and Time
12 May 2010 13:15 - 14:45
This side event will focus on coral reefs, the world’s most biodiverse marine ecosystems, and the need for a global emergency strategy to ensure their protection and restoration. The crisis facing coral reefs through the combined effects of climate change and direct anthropogenic impacts was highlighted in July 2009 at an expert workshop in London. The main elements of the draft emergency strategy for coral reefs, finalised at a meeting in April 2010, will be presented at the event by a panel of coral reef experts and then discussed. In particular, the priorities for action required to conserve coral reef biodiversity, ecosystem services and resources for the sustainable use and enjoyment of millions of people over the next decade will be debated.
