Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)
Biorights is a new economic paradigm for environmental conservation that tries to compensate the opportunity costs of commons for wise use of natural resources on which they depend for their livelihood. In developing the South globe important ecosystems that are rich in biodiversity and have significant ecosystem services are also inhabited by people lying below poverty line who depend on the ecosystem services for their livelihood. This develops a negative link between conservation and poverty alleviation. This workshop would entail brainstorming sessions for defining new fiscal tools for compensating the opportunity cost of commons incurred to conserve the ecosystem by transforming 'Payment for Environment Services', (PES). The hypothesis is that Biorights can negate this negative link. The workshop would facilitate the participants with exposure to successful case studies on Biorights from East Kolkata Wetland, Ramsar site of India and Yangtse Valley Reserve forest in Bhutan. The workshop would lead to the formation of an international network on Biorights. Dr. Dipayan Ry-SAFE and Rajendra Shende, TERRE Policy Centre
