Meeting
Twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity
IIn this side event, international scientific projects funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in Vietnam, the Philippines and China, as well as a project in which German scientists collaborate with partners in Japan relate their scientific results to several Aichi-2020 targets, in particular to target 7 'areas under agriculture and forestry are managed sustainably', target 8 'reduce pollution' (especially pesticides), target 13 'to maintain genetic diversity of cultivated plants', and target 14 ‘keep up essential services’. The projects provide scientific support to resource users and policy makers in their search for sustainable land management solutions, including in rice production and rubber cultivation . The projects are implemented in close cooperation between German scientists, scientists of the respective partner countries and regional and local governing bodies and stakeholder organizations. After a short introduction to the funding programmes, results will be presented by the following projects: • LEGATO: Land-use intensity and ecological engineering – Assessment tools for risks and opportunities in irrigated rice based production systemsin Vietnam and the Philippines (http://www.legato-project.net/) • SURUMER: Sustainable Rubber Cultivation in the Mekong Region - Development of an integrative land-use concept in Yunnan Province, China (https://surumer.uni-hohenheim.de/90716?L=1) • JAGUAR: Sustainable futures for cultural landscapes of JApan and Germany - biodiversity and ecosystem services as Unifying concepts for the management of Agricultural Regions (http://www.uni-giessen.de/cms/JAGUAR) The side event will contribute to the discussion on how science can and should best support the implementation of Aichi targets related to cultural landscapes. This discussion itself is a crucial step in order to achieve Target 19 on improving, sharing, transferring and applying the science base related to biodiversity and its values.
