Side Event
Valuing the Deep: Marine Genetic Resources in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction
Organizer
Defra
Date and Time
15 October 2014 13:15 - 14:45
Meeting
Twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity
The United Nations General Assembly is debating a possible implementing agreement (or agreements) on marine biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction. Access and benefit-sharing may be one component of any implementing agreement with a decision expected in 2015. This side event presents the results of research commissioned by Defra (UK) on the actual and potential uses and economic value of marine genetic resources. The research involved large scale mapping of the scientific and patent literature to identify deep-sea marine genetic resources combined with an expert consultation process. The results will be of interest to delegates working on the marine programme of work, the Nagoya Protocol and those interested in debates taking place in the framework of UNCLOS.
