The 7th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP-7) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted a Programme of Work on Protected Areas. It emphasizes that the goals it has included allow a framework within which national and regional targets could be developed according to national priorities. Within this context Brazil and some other signatory countries are developing National Plans, indicating goals, indicators and means in order to reach the aimed targets. Brazil launched its National Plan on January 2005. It is presently under conclusion and on the way to be approved on March 2006. The Brazilian Plan on Protected Areas has strategies and methodologies which were discussed with many stakeholders. It has technical and financial cooperation from many non-governmental organizations. This cooperation is assured by a Memorandum of Understanding signed by NGOs and the Brazilian Environmental Ministry. Another interesting point on the Brazilian National Plan is the suggestion for the integration of some other protected areas as the Indigenous Peoples lands, which today represent circa 12% of the Brazilian territory. Such suggestion has the aim of enhancing the biodiversity conservation potential. It has also the scope of reaching a broader scale in order to achieve ecological representativeness in the regional scenario. The proposal of this side event is to share Brazilian and international experience and expertise with parties whose strategies are not yet framed, presenting methodologies and strategies which can be divided, as well as searching for lessons to be learned.
