In paragraph 20(b) of
decision XII/1, the Conference of the Parties requested the Executive Secretary to convene a meeting of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Indicators for the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 to, among other things, identify a small set of measurable potential indicators that could be used to monitor progress at the global level towards the Aichi Biodiversity Targets with a focus on those that are currently not well addressed and those that may be relevant to the United Nations post-2015 development agenda and sustainable development goals. The
AHTEG met from 14 - 17 September 2015.
In
recommendation XIX/4, paragraph 10(c), the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice welcomed the
report of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on Indicators for the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, took note of the proposed list of generic and specific indicators for the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 identified by the Group and requested the Executive Secretary to facilitate peer review of the list and to update it accordingly.
In
recommendation XX/13, paragraph 3, the SBSTTA requested the Executive Secretary, in consultation with the members of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on Indicators for the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and partners of the
Biodiversity Indicators Partnership, to update the list of indicators in the light of the comments made during the twentieth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice applying the criteria contained in
recommendation XIX/4, and to make the updated list of indicators available through the clearing-house mechanism of the Convention on Biological Diversity prior to the
thirteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties. In response to this request, the list of indicators was posted
here.
In its
decision XIII/28, COP 13 welcomed the updated list of indicators and noted that the list provides a framework to be used, as appropriate, for assessing progress towards the Aichi Biodiversity Targets at the global level and by Parties, other Governments and international organizations.
