Parliamentarians and Biodiversity Initiative
Since its inception, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has identified Parliamentarians as a major group involved in the implementation of the Convention. Parliamentarians are the main players adopting legislation deriving from decisions of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention. By creating, amending and ratifying laws, they translate the consensus reached internationally under the Convention into tangible actions at the national and local levels.
As part of a partnership being developed by the CBD and GLOBE International, the CBD is conducting a survey of island parliamentarians. We want to better understand how legislators are delivering the objectives of the CBD directly from Parliamentarians who have actually been engaged in policies and practices related to island biodiversity. To this end, we ask island parliamentarians to take the time to reply to a short questionnaire, which will take a maximum of 15 minutes. Responses will assist us to:
- understand the role of parliamentarians, as part of the in-depth review of the CBD programme of work on island biodiversity, to take place at SBSTTA-16 and COP-11.
- support these legislators by highlighting their achievements and setting up a network that would contribute to events such as the Parliamentarians and Biodiversity Forum led by GLOBE for COP 11, and side events at SBSTTA-16, WGRI-4 and Rio + 20.
